(webstagram) The fantasy of amazing camping while #bikepacking often doesn't come true IRL. Usually you get a late start, progress is slow, there's mechanicals, there's route-finding hiccups, you're losing the race against daylight, & ultimately end up compromising your demands for epic scenery for the promise of a meal & any ol' patch of flat ground. Well that's pretty much exactly what happened to us on day 1 of our recent CO mission.. but we refused to skimp on the accommodations💅 #35mm #dustycaps

(webstagram) Here's some personal history & a little story about the pardner in this pic. End of Summer 94 or 95 a crew of jokers from West TX moved to the town of Telluride, CO. Two of them, Justin (pictured) & Sean (@elburro74) got hired as seasonal help to rent & tune skis & boards at a ski shop in Mountain Village, alongside yours truly. MV had just been incorporated as CO's newest municipality, but at that time it wasn't much more than a couple bougie condos & our scrappy double-wide shack in the middle of a muddy parking lot cut into the side of the mountain. I was a slightly rudderless snowboarding-obsessed E Coast college dropout who sorta accidentally ended up moving to Telluride earlier that year (earning me the nickname "Gill-brah" w the Texans😒).. & those guys were fresh off the ranch, or freshly minted Texas Tech grads (is there a diff?) who had that CO obsession that every Texan seems to have, & an endless list of hilarious nicknames for everybody they knew. The benevolent alpine-hippie-western-dirtbag vortex of TRide absorbed us & we all became fast friends. Who's to say if I ever would've learned about javelina, or pearl snap buttons, or George Jones, or chicken-fried steak, had I not fallen in with this crew? We had a hell of a year, & then I checked out to go back to school. In the blink of an eye 20+ years has flashed by. Those guys stuck around SW CO & created amazing families & lives in those same stunning mountains.. while life led me on a decidedly different path, before landing me back in SW CO on a recent adventure, where I was able to reunite w my old buds. Justin, aka "Farm", is one of the best dudes around & tell me you can't hear that Texas-sized laugh coming thru this pic! Shot on July 4 at his dad, Bubba's, chuckwagon on Main St in Rico, CO // & just for shits & giggles, here's an old pic of JB, soggy & cold in the bed of a ranch rig we hitchhiked after I took him kayaking for his first time #35mm
