YOGA'S FAVORITE THINGS: WEEK 2 THE IN BETWEEN ⠀ Every moment a trillion cells dance unnoticed just on top of, underneath, around the vessel of your being. The Earth spins, the body sways, you change. Every second regardless of how conscious you are of it, you change in invisible ways. ⠀ It's hard to come to grips with the miracle that it is that brought us here together. Or how we came to be the way we appear. Change so often feels unsettling and scary. ⠀ The lure to me of Vinyasa yoga has so often been in slow, deliberate movement in a chaotic and unsure world. Transitioning in the space in between poses with as much mindful awareness as I can muster affords me the opportunity to practice moving through change that I will inevitably face in life with the same mindful care and presence. ⠀ Sometimes I do a good job and sometimes I freak out both on and off the mat but I always find the spaces in between to be so interesting in revealing. ⠀ This week's practice, we move...a lot. Not too fast, not too slow, but practicing skill in the "in between." You may be surprised to feel more grounded at the end of this week's sequence. You might also curse me silently in your mind. Yoga to relieve stress and calm the mind ✨⁣ ⁣ Last week I attended a restorative yoga teacher training with @janetstoneyoga in San Francisco. Wow, my savasana hasn’t been longer and more comfortable in a long time. )) ⁣ ⁣ Restorative yoga with its many props is meant to create comfortable positions for the body which promote deep relaxation. Although many people often fall asleep in these poses, the essence of this yoga style is not in sleeping, but in relaxing in silence, releasing stress, and looking deeper within yourself. Even a short practice of restorative yoga helps not only to rest, but to improve mood and calm the mind. 🙌🏻⁣ ⁣ Now in almost every class I teach (and in my personal practice) I try to include at least one of the restorative yoga poses. Students love them! 🌞

“The yoga pose you avoid the most, you need the most.” ~ Unknown • Forward folds can be hard for multiple reasons and that’s why I love all the variations of it. It’s truly yogis choice! • But here is how I like to do it. I actually use the head to toe pose that I learned at @yogamayastudio in one of the hot hatha 26 classes. • 💥Make sure your grounded. Dig those roots deep! 💥Keep your knees soft. Your knees are going to give your belly the love and support it deserves. 💥Slowly roll down from the hips and don’t fold all the way over. Kind of sit your belly on your knees and double check your roots. 💥Now take your hands and wrap them around your calves and keep your elbows in by your knees. Don’t force your grasp. How often do you say “ I am tight?”⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣Tightness is not YOUR IDENTITY.⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣We have A TON of athletes who come to class and the first time I meet them they usually tell me that they are “tight”⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣And YES….OF COURSE it is true that they are tight THAT day…⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣but a much more USEFUL way of thinking about tightness is to think of it as an EVENT.⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣As in “I’m tight right NOW”⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣Or “I am tight this week”⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣Or “I am tight because I ran or surfed yesterday.”⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣
